Era Psychotherapy

Matrescence

Matrescence is the developmental transition to motherhood: the hormonal, physical, and emotional shifts that reshape a woman's identity as she becomes a mother. Like adolescence, it is a profound period of change. Unlike adolescence, it is rarely named, recognized, or supported.

What society describes as an idyllic transition often feels more complicated: difficult and wonderful, confusing and inspiring, exhausting and meaningful, all at once. If you are struggling, you are not failing. You are in the middle of one of the most significant developmental shifts of your life.

How Therapy Helps

Matrescence is a transition, not a problem to be solved, but the difficulties that surface during it deserve real support. Therapy offers space to make sense of who you are becoming, to grieve what has changed, and to ease the symptoms that make the transition harder than it needs to be.

We work with women across the full perinatal arc: through identity and role shifts, relationship strain, the natural losses that come with pregnancy and parenthood, and the resolution of birth and postpartum trauma. Treatment is grounded in evidence-based approaches and tailored to where you are in the transition.

You are not alone, and you do not have to navigate this on your own.

Taking the First Step

Beginning Therapy

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. Many clients reach out after spending months — sometimes years — wondering whether they should seek support.

If you're considering therapy, we'd love to help you take the next step.
